New ticket save the date magnet design

It's hard to resist adding more ticket designs to the website, even thought the save the date ticket page is getting to be quite full.

A recent addition is this 2.5x6.5 inch ticket save the date magnet:
Ticket wedding save the date magnet

Unlike a lot of the ticket designs on the website, this one isn't specifically themed for Broadway, a music concert, or a particular sport.  The other thing that is different - it includes a calendar.

Here is another shot of the ticket magnet with a clear sleeve & a mailing envelope.  At Save the Date Originals, you can get magnets alone or with envelopes... plus return address printing, if you want.

Taking care of business(es) part 10

Many fun and pretty save the date magnets are heading out from STDO this month, but now for something a little different.

STDO recently worked on an order for Agile Planning Scrum cards.  Have no idea what those are?  It's basically a special deck of cards used for planning exercises, used by work teams.  Instead of the usual set of Poker cards, something more like the Fibonacci sequence is used.

In this case, Hewlett Packard wanted personalized decks for each member of the team, with their name printed on it, front and back.

Can do.

And yes, you could get personalized poker/planning cards of your own.  These are typical 2.5x3.5 inch cards, and are glossy/laminated.

Pricing varies depending on how much personalization you want and what the design of each card looks like.  You could get sets where each card would cost 75 cents, or a set where each card would cost $1.25 dollar each.

In this case, each card had the team members name printed front and back, which put it in the higher range.

You could instead get a deck of scrum cards where each set has a different color, but no individual personalization, so that they would be usable for any team.

Hollywood Stars

I love it when customers ask me if I can make something- and it's something I probably would not have thought to make.

In this case, one of my customers asked if I could make Hollywood Stars for her to use to line a walkway at the reception.  Answer: Yes!  Introducing 11x11 inch laminated cards.

For her project, she has them printed with the names of the bridal party.

I can also see these being hung up on walls, framed at a guest table, used as place mats for the bridal party. or, used as photo props.  These can be printed with just first names, or, the wedding date, or, maybe you could get a set with a "Bride" and a "Groom".

Save the date photo idea: Get a set of 4, printed with "Save", "The", "Date", and then your date in numbers.

Starting at:
$8.50 for 1
$15.00 for 2
$20.50 for 3
$26.00 for 4

Not including shipping.  Contact Save the Date Originals for pricing on large quantities or to place an order.

Stationery Store?

Save the Date Originals often shows up in local searches for "Stationery Store" or "invitation store".  STDO is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but doesn't have the kind of storefront where customers can randomly walk in to browse through a selection of card stock and envelopes.

Save the Date Originals is primarily a place that makes custom invitations, save the dates, and fridge magnets for a variety of events, businesses, and other needs.  This means that each project is usually unique to the customer/event.  Customers are usually ordering a custom printed item, not blank card stock.  You could get a set of custom stationery or cards made that are printed with *your* name and favorite colors, for example.

Additionally, most communication with customers is handled via email.

Local customers can actually place bulk orders for card stock and envelopes though.  Need 1000 a2 5x3.5 inch envelopes in pearlescent gold?  STDO can offer that.  Looking for pocketfolds in a particular color?  Email to ask whether there are pocketfolds available in that color.

If you happen to be in the Milwaukee area and couldn't find what you wanted at a local stationery or scrapbooking store, feel free to contact Save the Date Originals.  Don't forget to include a quantity when you  are looking for a price quote.

Save the Date Magnets

There are a lot of places on the internet offering printed fridge magnets for "Save the Date Magnets" these days, but, not all are created equal.  After starting out some 8 years ago, Save the Date Originals has learned, grown, and, boastfully offers superior magnets.

If you are browsing around the internet, how would you know the difference between the magnets at Save the Date Originals verses some place like VistaPrint?  That is a little difficult when you are probably more focused on looking at *designs* to be printed on your magnet, rather than the differences between the actual magnets.

Well, here is a blog post to tell you about the awesomeness of Save the Date Originals.

When it comes to deciding on a place to get your magnets, there are various things to consider.  Print quality, magnetic thickness, glossy finish, available designs, production time, magnet pricing, shipping costs, and, flexibility.

STDO wins as far as print quality, thickness, glossy finish, costs, and flexibility.

Print quality is something that deserves a whole blog post of it's own, but, just two paragraphs:

Fridge magnets were originally something that mostly just large businesses ordered to promote their business. Image quality just needed to be "good enough".  Not all companies have made the transition into higher resolution printing for shorter runs where the customers are couples who *care* about how jaggedy the wording is, or how grainy their photo is.  If you are only sending out 50 magnets, and if you are sending them to friends, and if you are sending them as the very first thing that will give people an impression of your upcoming event, you want it to look good.

For print quality, STDO prints at a high resolution.  Additionally, instead of the usual 4 color CMYK printing process, STDO is using an 8 color printer, which leads to more vibrant colors.  Royal blue, for example, tends to come out looking dullish purple in CMYK.  Tragic!

Thickness:  Magnetic thickness is another important point for magnets.  You probably don't care that much how thick your magnets are... but if you receive a really flimsy one, eh, it's not great.  STDO magnets are not so incredibly super thick that you will have problems mailing them out, but they aren't as flimsy as many of the magnets available online.

Gloss: A glossy finish is a standard feature for STDO magnets.  One can actually order magnets without the glossy finish, and even have magnets made with something special like a shimmer card stock instead, but for the usual order, your magnets will arrive with that gloss over the print.

Complete: Yes, it has to be mentioned that the magnets arrive complete.  STDO used to get questions about whether assembly was required.  It seems that some place or places are selling a printed piece + a piece of magnet and leaving customers to glue/attach the printed piece to the magnet.

Flexibility:  This is one of the best things about being a small company... If you want to contact Angela to set up an order page for an order of an odd number like 113 magnets, you can.  You can even order different quantities of two different designs.  You can get something- like hotel information cards- added with envelopes.  You can even have a new/custom magnet size made (for rectangular magnets).  If you want that there design in a different color, let the designer know.  You can get save the dates for weddings, corporate events, family reunions, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, christenings, school events, and, even get actual wedding invitations as magnets.

Production times at Save the Date Originals, though, are really only about average.  There are places that can deliver you your magnets super fast... but they won't necessarily be quality magnets.  A common saying:  You can have two out of these three: "Fast, Cheap, Quality".

When Save the Date Originals first began offering save the dates, it was started as a place that focused on the designs, and subcontracted the production of magnets.  Within a few years, Save the Date Originals started producing it's own magnets.  Why?  Because the owner wanted to offer magnets that weren't flimsy, were printed awesomely without weird defects, weren't cut at odd angles, and also, were packaged carefully (so that they don't arrive dented!).

Lastly, you can be sure that there won't be any tricky check boxes during checkout to trick you into "agreeing" to buy some other product or service.  You won't find shipping costs that are randomly inflated twice or more over what they need to be.  Your names and addresses will never be given out to a 3rd party as part of a sold mailing list.  In other words, there will be none of the shady shenanigans you may have encountered from larger corporations that are looking to boost their profit margins.

Convinced?  Stop by the main magnet section to browse designs and pricing by magnet size:

Envelopes

My caption for this photo is:

"In a land of USPS, in a sea of boring white envelopes, there was a sparkle of metallic gold."

USPS stands for the US Postal Service, of course.

You have to admit that it is more interesting to receive a color envelope in the mail.  Consider some options for your upcoming 2012 holiday mailings... there are a lot of possible colors and even textures.

You can actually order just envelopes here with Save the Date Originals, and even blank cards and card stock.  STDO doesn't keep a large inventory- this option is for customers who want to order something beyond the options available at a local craft store.  As with all other orders, there would be a few emails to sort out options and details before an order page was set up.

Customers local to Milwaukee, WI can pick up their orders instead of having them shipped.

Looking forward to 2012

Hello! This is the last STDO blog post for 2011. It's been a good year; More magnet sizes, more designs, product upgrades, and more.

I, Angela Bauter, hereby resolve to keep improving the website and working on new designs.

Why choose Save the Date Originals?

1) Design variety. You can find all manner of styles on the website- from offbeat to elegant, simple to photographic, sports, humor, skylines, cartoons, floral, you name it. And if you don't see it, it can probably be made.

2) Personal attention from a designer. Want some tweaks? Can do. Switch up the colors a bit. Move a design element over a bit. If your photo doesn't fit the design you saw, I'll make some tweaks just to get you what you want. Don't end up with awkward and weird text positioning from an automated service.

3) Quality printing. Magnets are printed with 8 tank printers, versus the old 4 tank printers that many fridge magnet makers are using. Want a bright lime green or a vibrant royal blue, instead of a darker washed out looking version of these colors? Can do.

4) Fridge magnets from STDO have a laminated finish, are made with a 20mil magnet, and, are hand cut. Say no to flimsy magnets that arrive crooked and yes to awesomeness from STDO.

5) Integrity. Your won't be shoved through an ordering process that is full of advertisements, nor will any of your information ever be sold to partner companies just for an extra buck.

6) USA business. Nothing you buy from STDO is going to be made in China. And when you have a problem, you talk directly to STDO employees... not an overseas customer support team.

Hello Knottie brides!

Yes, you. You have just created a cute little website for your wedding via the knot.com and now you want to give out a little save the date magnet that includes the url. You know that if you give out a fridge magnet, your guests won't lose the address, and will always have access to information about your Big Day.

But if you want to go with those small 3.5x2 inch magnets, your gigantic website is kind of a problem.

Why? It doesn't look good on a lot of designs. And on many, well, it just isn't going to fit.

This small save the date magnet design is a popular one:

It's simple, it's cute, it's not excessively swirly.

But if someone asks me to modify the design with a knot.com url:

Oh, that's not good. And you really can't go below 9pt font size if you expect your wording to print well and/or be readable.

What I usually do is send a couple to notlong.com to shorten their url. But it's a third party site, and a lot of couples are leery about using a random website.

Well, I just set up my own url shortening service. Instead of notlong.com, you now use... savedat.es! Basically, a shortener creates another shorter url that will automatically send someone right to your website.

That shorter website would works a lot better with most save the date designs:

This shortening service is maintained by Save the Date Originals. I am not going to promise that your short url will work into infinity, but as long as I'm in business, you should be good. I've been in business 7 years and counting- you probably only need your short url for a year or two.

Excuses, excuses.

I love a good excuse to create promotional materials for my own business. I spend all my time on printed materials for weddings and other businesses- Save the Date Originals could use some love!

318 Designs is hosting a bridal workshop this weekend, and I am sending in some favor magnets. 318 Designs is a Louisiana based event planning company. Check out the website: http://318designsbynicole.com

The favor magnets are 4x2.5 inches and feature a "celebrate life" theme. I'm adding in folded cards with some promotional print. Both card and magnet are going right into the striking blue envelope.

Save the- Oops! 6 save the date mistakes.

Hip!nk just wrote an excellent blog entitled "The Top 5 Wedding Invitation Mistakes".

It is well worth reading, and, it got me thinking. Extending that idea to save the dates... what are the most common mistakes I see couples making when they are ordering save the date magnets or cards? After 13 years primarily working with save the dates, there are a few things that come to mind.

1) Too Many!

2) Asking for RSVPs

3) Including "& Guest"

4) TMI

5) Timing!

6) Small magnets.

Read about why these are mistakes on the website:

Car Door Wraps

When it comes to signage for cars, it's easy to start off with a bumper sticker, then, maybe add a car door magnet.

What next? What is the next step?

How about... a car wrap. This is a special product, one I do not offer.

Sometimes, though, I do provide designs for customers who want to print something themselves, or for a specialty product that will be manufactured by another company.

The example above is actually my own car. I partnered with Fast Signs in Menomenee Falls (WI) to print and apply a wrap to the two side doors.

Why not stick with a car magnet? Two reasons:

1) The side panels of this car are not magnetic.

2) Having the sign crafted and applied to directly to the car really does offer a striking look.

You'll notice that the sign bears a resemblance to my business card:

But it definitely isn't as simple as resizing the graphics used for the business card; They had to be completely remade for the larger size of the car door. You also have to consider the space. It is best to avoid the curlier lettering (as seen on my business card) for a car, where you want things to be easy to read as you roll by someone.

"Save the Date Originals" now has a veritable traveling billboard.
