Yay: Flags!

Save the Date Originals is now experimenting with flags.

These won't be cloth flags- these will be printed cards attached to sticks.

What can you use flags for?

*  You could get flags to put in your centerpieces as table numbers.

*  You could use flags as photo props (wedding date, or a "Mr" and "Mrs" pair).

*  You could get a bunch of "Yay" flags as favors.

*  You could get a couple of signs to direct people.

Pricing will vary depending on the printed design, card shape, and needed stick size.

Doctor Who Baby Shower

Hee.  How can one resist?  This is a 4.4x6.2 inch shower invitation with some whovian influence.

This card is made of white card stock;  The gray starry background is part of the printed design.  The circles at the top supposedly means "Baby!" in timelord language, but I can't vouch for that 100%, not being able to read the language myself.

Movie Ticket Wedding Invitation

Back in 2010, Angela wrote a blog post about a movie ticket themed wedding invitation design.  It was done with a red background and looked fun.  The post was mainly to show off the way an invitation design could look (and be ordered) in different versions with alternate languages.

This invitation design is one of the ideas that hadn't made it onto the actual website yet, but had people contacting Save the Date Originals now and then.

Finally, a version of the invitation design has made it onto the website.  This version is printed on white card stock, with full color printing of a yellow background with red and black text.  The fun addition is the metallic red sleeve.

Check it out:

The response card is a simple but carries the idea with it's title "Admission Ticket".

While this version uses white card stock and a red sleeve, Save the Date Originals is a custom invitation place, so if a couple wants to change things up a bit, they can.

This invitation design is often of interest to people who were eyeing up this movie ticket save the date card that was created the year before the invitation. This save the date card is made out of actual yellow card stock- that isn't a printed background.  It is fairly small at about 4x2.5 inches, and is sometimes ordered as a fridge magnet of that size instead.

Side note- here is a link to the 2010 post/version of the wedding invitation:

Happy Slingshot Birds Save the Date Card

How is this for offbeat? A save the date card with two happy birds flying towards... their wedding cake.

No angry birds here! Just some good humor for those engaged couples who love the game "Angry Birds". Have fun with your wedding :-)

PS: This can be made as a fridge magnet.

facebook save the date card

I do enjoy a quirky project; This card definitely falls into the offbeat category.

It's a 6.25x4.25 inch card that is designed to look a bit like a facebook page. There is room for multiple photographs, the wedding date, the couple's name, location. At the top, there is even room for a website url!

If you met on facebook, you are both facebook addicts, or you just think this is hilarious, check out the design's detail page on Save the Date Originals for more info.

Twilight &True Blood Themed Party

I have worked on Halloween themed save the date and invitations in the past. They have all incorporated imagery you might expect- such as a haunted house, a pumpkin, a skull, or maybe a ghost.

A party theme that is similar, but more specific, is: Twilight and/ot True Blood vampire themed parties.

One of my recent customers decided to throw a party with this party theme. She found some awesome drink labels here, on HWTM's blog, that incorporate blood splatters.

But she wanted more than drink labels- she wanted favor tags, First Aid Kit labels, and invitations.

The 5.5x4.25 inch invitations were sent out with 5x3.5 inch response cards, and include a quote from Twilight. She will hand out mini first aid kits to guests to symbolize Bella's klutzy nature.

You might have noticed that her themed party was also her birthday party. Turning 30 might suck, but this party won't.

On a sidenote- check out this alternate 4x8 inch invitation design:

There really are a lot of ways to go for invitations designs in this "vein".

New boarding pass save the date card

Save the date with a fun sea-shell boarding pass!

This new variation on the boarding pass design idea is 3.5x8.5 inches. Printed on a nice thick light blue card stock with black and a darker blue ink colors, this card takes advantage of the colored card stock.

Like the other boarding pass designs, this card comes with rounded corners. This card does not come with a perforated tear off section.

Folded Birthday Cards

For this project, one of my customers had a fun idea.

Have you ever heard of the Shel Silverstein? Among other things, he wrote Children books, such as "Where the Sidewalk Ends".

For my customer's son's birthday, she wanted a custom birthday card that was unique. The first part of her idea was to put a poem on the front of the card. The front of the card is simple, set up the same way a "Shel Silverstein" book might be.

A nice simple design... But that isn't all! The inside is a riot of colorful balloons with the birthday message:

Check out what this customer has to say about her order:

"Ordering custom invitations from STDO was the best decision I've made in planning my son's birthday party. Angela was able to provide several proofs for my ideas almost immediately, and was very responsive to requests to change or tweak details of the design. Her communication with me during the process was prompt and informative, and above all, I am absolutely delighted with the quality of the finished product. I have gotten many compliments on them and will definitely be a repeat customer. Thank you, Angela!"

Save the Date: The equation

Below is a wedding save the date design that features... what looks like a math equation.

Quirky, fun, and for the math nerds who are getting hitched.

Even if your guests have not suffered through a math or physics class lately, they will get the gist of what it going on.

This is designed for a 2x5.5 inch magnet or card.

Save the Date tickets

Tickets look-a-likes are a popular idea for wedding save the dates. One ticket design in particular that people enjoy- sports like designs.

In an earlier post about a sports ticket save the date, I featured a 2.5x6.25 inch ticket that someone had me design. This particular ticket was made out of a skinnier flyer type paper. Since then, it's been more popular to get the ticket design printed on a thicker card or even a magnet, both of which are more cost effective at the smaller 2x5.5 inch size. With wedding save the dates, people often want to stick to simple short lines of text, so this smaller size works. People who want a similar design for something else- like a rehearsal dinner invitation- need to go with a bit of a larger card (2.75x8.5 is a good size),

As with all designs on the website, customers can ask for customization; Photograph, no photograph, wording, colors, etc. One thing that usually needs to stay the same, though, is the font style. There are only a small number of fonts that will work in the small available space.

Here are a couple of design examples on the website:

Whether going with a 2x5.5 inch magnet or card, if customers want to mail the save the date ticket out alone, I recommend the 3.5x6 inch envelope size. I do offer white envelopes of that size.

Winter holiday and Christmas themed save the dates

A popular winter themed small save the date design: The snowman and snow-woman.

I have decided to remove the winter/Christmas themed page on the website for now, and move these designs into their appropriate sections. These section includes not just wedding save the dates, but also same family oriented card and magnet designs.

In the future, each section (cards, magnets, by size) will have options to separate out designs by theme and design trends for viewing (such as, summer, winter, fall, calendar, flowers, butterflies, hearts, and more). Because so many of my designs could easily fall into multiple categories with just a small change (such as colors) this will not be a quick conversion. Thus, in the meantime, the Christmas/Winter theme designs will be merged back into the website.

Save the Date: cartoon couple design

One of the popular designs for the small size 2x3.5 inch magnets is a cute cartoon couple with a heart. The version currently on the website:

The "AB" is a digital watermark.

Text/wording changes aside, there are more changes that can be made. Myself being the person who drew the cartoon couple, customers can request that I create new versions for them. Something like changing the color of the dress, hair, or heart, does not cost extra. Something that involves re-drawing (new hair style, new clothing styles) do cost more. Check out these alternate versions:

This cute couple is mainly used for save the date magnets or wedding favor magnets, as you would expect.

Boarding Pass

Here is an example of a boarding pass save the date design. The boarding pass idea is increasingly popular, right along with old-style movie tickets and sports tickets.

This design was printed on white card stock, and is about 4.25x6.25 inches. This size allows for a good amount of information and still leaves enough space to create a fun layout. This particular design features pink and orange colors, along with the faint image of a cruise ship. The star-seal sports a reminder about passports, something your guests would need to get settled early for a destination/cruise wedding.

One could get a similar boarding pass design on a plain flat card. But this example is taking the idea a little further. Complete with rounded corners, this card has a perforated piece that can be torn off.

As usual, if you are interested in the boarding pass idea but want to work out an alternate design with me, shoot me an email. Link to contact page.

Tickets

Save the Dates that emulate sports tickets? Can do. Check out the example to the left- Think Red Sox. This is another one of those projects that was created for a customer based on their idea.

In respect of copyright, instead of using the actual red sox logo, I can draw up something similar for a logo. Most couples will end up going with a baseball or football graphic for similar ticket designs.

The example on the left is about 2.5x6.25 inches, printed on a 100lb coated stock rather than the 80lb cover glossy card stock used for many of the cards on my website.

Addendum: I thought I would add in a quote from the email this customer sent me...

"...Just wanted to let you know we received the STD's in the mail the other day and they are FANTASTIC!! You did such a great job and were so easy to work with. My sister (the only one who knows we are doing them) loved them as well. It's going to be hard not to show them off until April 08! If you ever need any recommendation, feel free to use my e-mail..."

Update, December 2009: visitors, please see the newer blog post about these kind of save the dates here. Also, don't forget to check out the website (click on the logo at the top).

Update, July 2011: Yes, you can still get similar save the dates! Magnets or cards, with or without envelopes. The "TicketMT9" design is close to the posted one here. You can have me change the colors, photo, and wording for your personalized awesomeness.

Those designs can also be printed as cards.
